We are building a number of Martian ships and this is two Hullcutters under construction. Click here to go back to Finished Hullcutters 1 or Finished Hullcutters 2

The Hullcutter is the backbone of many Martian fleets and is built - to roughly the same design - in many different yards (hence the variation in design!)

Basic materials are either balsa or hard (pink) foam, leading to different 'treatments' - ie more curves or less. Extensive use has been made of Wills Plastic sheet for decking, and 'Plastic Padding Elastic' filler.

The guns for the Hullcutters - these are being assembled from a mixture of mid 19th century carriages and barrels - some from earlier periods. The Lob gun - the short, fat mortar - is scratch built from the engine pod of a Star Trek Enterprise alarm clock, with a widened carriage made from two standard pieces can and stuck together. Barrel interior from plastic rod and filler.

These shots show the slight differences in construction styles and materials for the two hullcutters. The first four images show the ship sculpted from hard foam and coated with Plastic Padding Epoxy filler, leading to a generally smoother shape. Guns are from the Lyzard Grin range.

The latter six shots show the second Hullcutter made on a balsa hull. Guns are from the
Foundry range and the ship is in the first paint phase, having has all of the build completed except for the actual propeller's themselves.

The latter five shots show the second Hullcutter. Guns are painted and in place. The paint phase now has chalk pastels added for shading.

Work progresses on the second Hullcutter. Amongst the notable differences between the two models, this one has cut away sections for the railings
